Temporary Closure of Selected Forts in Ghana

The Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB) wishes to inform the general public, stakeholders, tourism operators, and visitors that a number of historic forts across the country have been temporarily closed to the public with effect from Thursday, 18th December 2025, until further notice.

The affected heritage sites are:

  • Fort Apollonia, Beyin
  • Fort St. Anthony, Axim
  • Fort Orange, Sekondi
  • James Fort, Jamestown
  • Ussher Fort, Usshertown

The temporary closure has been necessitated by the need to undertake essential maintenance works, comprehensive safety assessments, and ongoing conservation activities at the affected sites. These interventions are critical to ensuring the structural stability, safety, and long-term preservation of these historically significant monuments.

As custodians of Ghana’s tangible cultural heritage, GMMB remains committed to safeguarding these forts, which form an integral part of the nation’s history and collective memory, as well as Ghana’s contribution to global heritage.

The decision to close the sites was taken in the interest of public safety and the sustainable management of the forts. The planned works are aimed at addressing structural concerns, enhancing visitor safety, and preserving the historical integrity of the monuments for future generations.

GMMB recognises the importance of these sites to education, tourism, and community identity and assures the public that all necessary measures are being taken to complete the required works efficiently and responsibly.

The Ghana Museums and Monuments Board sincerely apologises for any inconvenience this temporary closure may cause and appreciates the understanding and cooperation of the public during this period.

Further updates regarding the reopening of the affected forts will be communicated through our official communication channels in due course.
