Ackey and Taku

Teku and Ackey

In 1796 the first European coins notably the ackey and the taku were introduced into West Africa. Between 1912 and 1913 the West African currency board was set up by the British government to issue African pound notes and coins.

After independence, in 1958, Ghana issued her first currency notes and coins (Ghana pounds, shillings and pence)
In 1965, the bank of Ghana introduced the cedi notes and pesewa coins for the first time.
